Does anyone know the origins of some of the stranger cave names? Where did boggarts roaring holes come from? which Johns got lost? what does pippikin and nippikin mean? Not that it really matters in caving terms, just interested to find out.

Can't speak for Yorkshire but Mendip cave names are explained in "Who Was Aveline Anyway" by Rich Witcombe.  ;)

Some of the Yorkshire ones are explained in a book called Ingleton Bygone and Present by Robert and Margaret Balderston published by Simpkin, Marshall & Co. in 1888.  :sneaky:

Holletts in Sedbergh have a copy for sale for £160.   (I'm sure I paid nowhere near that much for mine.  :-\ )
