Papua Caving Trip (August - September 2023): Goa Kali Maru

Hi everyone!

I'm Giacomo, a 31-year-old Italian caver based in London. I’ve been following the forum for some time to read about caves around the UK, but never got the chance to introduce myself (I should have done so in the appropriate section, sorry!).

Anyway, earlier this month I returned from a caving trip to Papua, Western New Guinea and I’ve prepared a trip report about the experience, perhaps it might be of interest. The aim of the trip was to locate and reach an uncharted river cave (“Goa Kali Maru,” cave of the river Maru) near the Cyclops Mountains on Papua’s northern coast.

I have attached the trip report in Pdf, it’s a compressed version as the original file was too large because of the pictures. Happy to share the original by email in case anyone’s interested. Posting a few pictures below as well.

An interesting read, not least for the expedition's origin in archival material, and for its insights into the local cultural attitudes to caves, their uses, and their ownership.
