There's a whole load of administrative safeguards in place these days, to make sure such projects have been thought through properly. (But perhaps we shouldn't stray off topic?)

Don't want to stray off topic, but have just listened to your interview on the 1964 KP Berger expedition, an excellent listen. http://caving-library.org.uk/audio/playback-246.html

The book I mentioned is titled

Ancient caves of castleton by John royse
He states that by boat they continued on from Victoria aven by boat to foreside mine which purportedly connected to speedwell cavern.

Is that the Royce who left his name in the large chamber up the rickety shafts in the Halfway House series in Speedwell Cavern?

He must have been a pretty handy caver - and obviously knew the system well.

Please can you remind us what's the date of that book?

That's an earlier Royse - the John Royse who wrote Ancient Castleton Caves (and who opened up Treak Cliff and sunk the shaft into the cartgate at Odin Gorge in 1926) died in 1943, or maybe 1945, shortly after the book was published. He's in the DPC line-up photo outside Blue John Cavern in The Castleton Mines book.

Thank you everyone who has posted, including those who have got me mixed up with Mark Wright  ;)
Sadly, I've never been to the Gouffre Berger but I have seen Mark's excellent book.

I think it was, yes. He was meant to show Peter Harrison the new vein the next day, but died that evening, not having told anyone where or how he'd hidden it. I hope I got the details right but I don't know if Vicky Turner reads this to correct any mistakes!

So, yet more research (an old photo caption) has confirmed P.H. Price to be Phil Price.
Thought I would let you all know and give this thread a "bump" at the same time  ;)
