Try using a Chinagraph pencil dont take paper use some blue visqueen (buliders plastic) simply roll up with laggy band works well good luck

Top tip for surveying is DHL envelopes. They are made out of some weird plastic paper that you can write on with most things.

Cut the envelopes open and you get an A3 sheet. cheaper than Nalgene paper if you have a good stationary dept at work.....

Waterproof felt pens work great...
