I have opened up the inside of the light and I can confidently say that it is not advisable.
Once the bezel is off, and you have removed all bulbs, you have to use a scalpel or a drill bit to cut away at the plastic blobs (these are the obvious columns of melted plastic which hold the face down) This takes a bit of patience, don't be tempted to just remove a few of them, they all need to go.
Once these have been removed you can get into the rather flimsy insides of the light. The parts in here resemble something you would expect to find inside a kinder egg, not a caving light.
The part i'm sure you are interested in (as i was) is where the wire comes into the headset. I was expecting to find some sort of grommet which holds the wire in place and waterproofs the headset. This is not the case!
The wire is just VERY firmly wedged into the hole and will only budge with a liberal application of boiling water and quite a lot of force.
If you want to replace the battery box my advice is to cut the cable off close to the existing box and connect an new one with a suitable plug or permanent connection. If you try to jimmy in a new cable into this headset you are likely to end up with an unusable light
