Petzl Elios, Failure/Breaking

Hi All,

I bought a new style Petzl Elios helmet just under a year ago, due to my old trusty one (about 8 years???) eventually giving up and showing some stress marks (whitening of the plastic).

Now i had issues with this model from the start due to the new adjustment system being much more fiddly and i suspected not so hardy. Turns out i was right. making the cradle bigger whilst off your head isn't as easy as it ought to be. It feels as though the buttons don't work properly. Never had an issue with my old wheel type.

I also don't like how the under ear parts consistently pop open on their silly hinge. The old style while more fiddly and slower was much more stable.

I assume these changes, at least the under ear adjusters were made to make it easier to use as a center helmet. Although I don't think the cradle is easier to adjust.

Anyway, my issue is its broken after less than a years use. Admittedly I do use it at least three or four days out off most weeks, but that is no different to my last one.
It has broken just behind the button on one of the twin plastic arms that come from the swivel back to the (stupid) button adjusters.

So two questions....

1. Is this something anybody else has had happen to them or heard off from somebody they know?
2. Is it maybe my ginger sweat that has destroyed the plastic faster than that of a normal person?

Ill attach a picture below

Thanks

Joe

I've returned a few to Petzl via my retailer from my client kit store. Petzl have I believe addressed this with newer batches. The group ones get adjusted a lot and the springs and plastic ratchet just were not up the job. It is uncommon to see a helmet that has one user go the same way.
Might be worth a chat with the retailer you used, they may send it in for you.
I do miss the old style adjustment though.

I've just moved away from Elios helmets personally after having them since they originally were released. Really like my CT Stark but it's early days on the longevity.

I have an Elios which gets a few bangs and no problems...yet.
I like its light weight, and fitted with one of my new lightweight Dragon lamps I find it ideal for digging....and concreting, knocking timbers in, all stuff I get up to which bangs kit about.

Now I think they may have been recently redesigned and mine might be one of the newer ones.

My other helmet is an old Ecrin which I find gets banged even more when I am working underground. I have to admit I like the Elios

For digging I use an entrenching tool.
Concreting, small coal shovel & 3ft frizbee as spot board.
Sledge or club for knocking in timbers.

That's how i read it too haha.

I have contacted the supplier and they are speaking to theirs. So well see where it goes.

I always find with the Ecrin i feel like a mushroom as i have a small head. Is anybody using any different helmets? Apart from the ct stark, which looks pretty nice although i have found some ct kit to not last too well.

Ive used ecrin, vertex and spelios/elios like you say joe i found the ecrin and vertex abit mushroom like whilst adding additional height which makes them a bit of a pain in confined spaces and whilst digging in small space, personally i love the elios but i have bout the club version (without vent slides) and the standard both have the button slider adjuster however the club version (spelios as had duo built in) feel way more sturdy than the one i have my Rude Nora 2 mounted too

our club is trialling one of these at the moment, it sits well on the head, not yet sure about its robustness

we find with the elios they tend to tip back on your head, as yet we have not had any issues with the adjustments breaking
At ?19 it might be worth buying a couple just to put through the paces (crush test, crash test, etc). If they turn out to be of reasonable quality, they would make for good University Club kit.

After speaking with Lyon, it is clear they will have nothing to do with the helmet as i drilled holes into it to mount the light. I had a feeling it would be the case, just hoped they would see the shell and cradle as separate parts. Oh well.
