So it looks like different Windows Mobile PDAs use different bluetooth setup screens. On my Dell Axim v51 I have to choose the COM port myself, and only get a choice of COM7 or COM8. I guess other PDAs do things differently so the if my original instructions fail then try what Sam found worked instead.
