    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

Porth yr Ogof or Little Neath River Cave?

I'm planning a trip to either Porth yr Ogof or Little Neath River Cave next week. I'm a visitor from Derbyshire, happy with SRT but my mate, although a climber, has only been down Giant's Hole. We want to do something sporty, don't mind getting wet but won't have wetsuits. The guide book gives good descriptions for both caves but LNRC seems to offer more variety and looks to be a longer trip. A bit of a loaded question but what would the panel suggest, considering our mixed ability? Also is the guidebook sufficient or do you need a survey? Are there any local issues/access/warnings that might be useful. Cheers, David

Porth yr Ogof isn't really very sporting (unless you count the danger of the resurgence pool which you won't want to do -- see the warnings at the entrance). I don't think it's too much fun -- you never get far from one of the entrances and you'll be elbowing scouts out of the way the entire time.

LNRC is quite sporting, possibly a bit too much for a beginner. A wetsuit is definitely recommended. You should be able to get around without a survey. It does flood so look out if there's rain next week.

Why those two in particular? If you want a compromise, Llygad Llwchwr is a good sporting wet-ish cave suitable for a beginner.

lNRC is a great cave but you have to know the weather and I'd agree a wetsuit is desirable. Best done with someone who knows it.

Thanks guys-sound advice. We're a bit limited to free access caves and for one day only so, thanks for that. Good suggestion from Rich; Llygad Llwchyr sounds more promising. Ric; will be in touch soon. Cheers, Dave

Combining Llygadd Llwchwr with Ogof Pasg/Ogof Foel Fawr would make a good day. I'd do
Llygadd  Llwchwr first.

the topic : advice on caves s.wales (clydach gorge area) discusses some
other options.

Cracking trip down LL the other week. A tricky climb into the entrance [a fixed rope left by a preceeding youth group was useful]and then we followed the black polish! A bit of everything and we did get to see the accessible sump chambers. Pity it was spoiled by the returning and by now, hysterical youth group emerging from a gentle semi-duck. Well worth a second visit and thanks again for the info. Cheers, David
