Pub Food

Hey guys,
I'm looking for somewhere to take my family for a pub dinner tomorrow night, in the Ingleton area.
Does anyone have any recent experiences of the food at the Marton Arms/Wheatsheaf or have any other suggestions (preferably not too far east) of where to go? Just looking for some decent, reasonably priced grub :)
Cheers, Cat

The food in the Martan Arms used to be pretty good, not sure now since its re opened. The Masons Arms on the A65 in Ingleton is good - huge portions of tasty food at a good price, with interesting salads, mostly containg fruit. Not eaten in the wheatsheaf for ages, but its a crap pub so I wouldn't bother.

Further away.....

Station Inn at ribblehead is always nice, nice surroundings, nice pub, good beer and great food - at a reasonable price.

The Hill Inn at Chapel Le Dale has some really good food as well, however its pretty overpriced - probably looking at ?12 - ?16 for a main course, however they always do a really good lamb shank! The puddings are also pretty amazing.

The only advice I'd give would be to NOT go to the Golden Lion in Horton in Ribblesdale. Dreadful food and service.

Lousy aesthetic taste too - isn't that the one with boring uniformly red hanging baskets and bilious green walls?

Stayed at the Dalesbridge centre near Austwick with ISSA and we went to The Game Cock in Austwick. Food was very good and reasonable price. Definate French influence as the head chef and waiter are French. Beers really good too. Thoroughly recommend it.  (y)

Thanks Benfool, I think I'll give the Mason's arms a try :)

anfieldman, yep I've been to the Game Cock in Austwick a couple of times - they do good pizzas (nom nom)... a bit out of the way this time though.

Was very impressed with the Mason's arms - I've never seen a salad with so much fruit on it! Nor such a large volume of chips (which we didn't even come close to finishing) - I'd certainly recommend it to anyone else :)

Too right. Last time I was in the mard-arses stopped serving us cos we won the quiz and the raffle. (We is proper clever in the Eldon). Prizes were shit too - Bottles of Lambrini. :ras:

Its ok talking about pub grub, I am a bit partial to it myself, the only trouble is it can end up very expensive regarding caving suits, during the last ten years I have gone up four sizes ???

Since the Marton was taken over the food has gone down hill badly. Very limited menu and badly cooked. The fact the place is empty most of the time says it all; avoid imho. The beer etc is rubbish too! Watching the staff sit around a table drinking until one of them gets up to serve at the bar when a customer walks in is never a good sign to me.
Our personal favourite right now is the Harts Head at Giggleswick. Really good food, good beer, and a proper friendly welcome from a 'real' landlord and landlady. Well worth a visit; more like what a good cavers pub used to be... and you don't get shunted into a 'rough' room away from the 'nice people' like some pubs tend to do.
