    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

Quicksand Passage, Lost Johns' Cave

On my way down Lost Johns' earlier today, I noticed that the entrance to Quicksand Passage was blocked off by a very elegant one metre-high cobble wall.

May I point out to the person(s) that built the wall, that Quicksand Passage is not intrinsically the wrong way. It just happens not to be the way you wanted to go. That is not a valid reason for blocking off a perfectly good cave passage, which is, in fact, worthy of exploration in its own right.

The wall was demolished...

... although to be fair, I bet most of the people who go up Quicksand Passage didn't want to go there either :D

(but quite right, no need to wall it off completely)

It does no one any harm to deviate accidentally from their chosen route for two minutes. It's all part of the learning experience, and it is all part of the caving experience. I would prefer not to see cairns and barriers littering our caves. They are unsightly and unnecessary.

Wow I bet someone is a bit miffed, walling isn't the speediest of endeavours!

It was a great piece of walling - one cobble thick, jammed between the passage sides to make a wall a metre high. It's a pity that the builder isn't using his talents more productively!
