Hi All,

I've decided to focus on caving for my dissertation, my question is "how does caving facilitate the spirit of adventure"

Anyone know of any literature surrounding this topic?

Any info would be great thanks.

I thought it was the spirit of adventure that facilitated caving. Maybe I've been doing things backwards all these years. No comment.....

It does appear tautological.

If it was something like "In what ways does caving instill a mindset of independence?" then I could definitely write a huge essay on that!

Would you need help, or could you do it alone?

Caving is great for adventure but I'm struggling to find any literature that backs this up, or anything about the benefits of caving  :(

You might even do well to use the search facility here for trip reports by Simon Beck and Known by None, both of whom have written numerous EXCELLENT essays which are captivating.

Re: benefits of caving - I lost four and a half stone, have become fitter than ever since childhood, travelled widely doing amazing stuff in amazing places with amazing people and learned lots along the way and intend to continue doing so for as long as I breathe.

Might be worth having a browse through that classic caving book "Underground Adventure" (by Jack Myers and Arthur Gemmel, published by Dalesman in 1952 - but still absolutely relevant even today).

Hint - the clue is in the name of the book!

Here's some more reading:

Ten Years Under the Earth - Norbert Casteret,
Adventures of another Pooh - Dave Yeandle,
Gaping Gill - Howard Beck,
Race Against Time - Eyre and Frankland
Down to a Sunless Sea - Mike Boon
Several Cave Diving books - Martyn Farr
Descent Magazine

There's plenty about the adventure side of caving in these books, particularly about the thrill of new discovery.

Maybe defining  the "spirit of adventure" would be a good starting  point?.

If you can track down a copy of 1000 metres Down (the story of the exploration of the Gouffre Berger) that would provide much of interest.
