Heard about this today, just a stunning find. The pitch head on page 2, was that the one that was shown in a video at the Mendip roundup at last years hidden earth? How long before trips will be allowed?

I think you're referring to Spider Hole, which is a different cave. Trips to that cave are already possible.

It has been mentioned that trips to this new discovery will most likely not be before early Spring as there's further stabilisation work to do, conservation taping, surveying, photography, further exploration and a general winter closure for sightseeing trips, too.

How about a national newspaper story? Any chance of a further photo trip before the end of tomorrow for an article in the Mail on Sunday? Congratulations, anyway. If you want to get in touch, my email is david@davidroseuk.com phone 07711 444042

there will be access in the future but please be patient. today's path laying and taping trip showed us how much we have to do before it will be safe to let people in in any number. The tourist season starts again next spring by which time we should have sorted things out a bit.

I understand that Longleat is already looking at driving a tunel and open Reservoir Hole as a show cave.

If they make the tunnel big enough they can run a cable car through it...  :alien:

Forget the wind ups. I do not foresee the possibility of this ever being a show cave.

Basic Report from yesterday.

Working trip yesterday with no photography. Survey completed to Resurrection. The start of which is 100m from the stalagmites in Topless Aven. Rudimentary survey done of The Frozen Deep. New bolts put in on the pitch. Acro prop fitted under horrible boulder below pitch. Resurrection scree slope tided and taped.Paths taped through The Frozen Deep but these need to be anchored. Currently no thoughts of looking for extensions. Maybe the boulder choke at the lowest point will be looked at next week. There may be a way down against the solid wall . Various high level openings , rifts, balconies but all present conservation problems or loose boulders. More amazed at the size of it this week. I think the total floor area is the astonishing thing plus the huge arch. Exited to live interview by ITV's weather man . Went out at 6.20 pm. Maybe some photography next week.

One more for the statisticians:

A connection with Gough's, which is not that far away at all now, would give a combined vertical range of 175 m. Equal third (on Mendip) with Longwood, behind Charterhouse and Manor Farm.

More importantly, a link should lead back to the river just beyond the end of Gough's sump 3 thus allowing the possibility of learning more about where the water goes and comes from.
