Retrieving gear from Peterson Pot

At the beginning of the summer the walls of Peterson Pot quite deftly undid the screwgate on the side of my harness and sent my hand jammer tumbling into the rift. A friend went on a very noble rescue mission to ‘fish’ with an open maillon on the end of a long piece of tat but couldn’t see it at all.

I’ve mostly given it for lost but I’m interested if anyone has had any luck with alternate methods e.g. magnet fishing? There must be other gear down there out of sight too. (trained ferrets was discussed and discarded as a silly idea).

Not sure how deep the rift is, but we use a Beta Designs ultralong clipstick with a GoPro gaffer taped to it whenever we have a problem like this. The modern gopros can function in wifi host mode and be connected to the mobile app directly to give you a live display. No need for internet. The longest stick is 6.5m long, plus the length of your arm. You may need to attach a baby torch to it for lighting. If you see your jammer, you can fashion some kind of hook or magnet and guide it with the gopro screen.

We've had it for a few years and it cost about £60 new. It has saved us thousands on scaffolding by allowing us to clip hangers to a high level truss. We also used it with a magnet to retrieve half a box of screws that we accidentally dropped in a tank at the Sealife Centre before 'Britain's Largest Spider Crab' had chance to eat them. (The wifi doesn't work underwater though).

I'm based in lancaster if you want to borrow it and promise not to drop it!

Thank you, that’s very nice of you. I might well give you a dm when I can scrape together a go pro and a weekend to stage a rescue mission

Have you considered taking Hagrid on a search mission down there and then just waiting till the whole thing is expanded when he gets stuck in it 😂😂

Magnet fishing in caves sounds like a right laugh, I’m sure there’s all sorts to be found in sump pools.
