Rift Pot

A group of us from Huddersfield managed to get down Rift Pot last weekend. What a lovely trip that is, good old Bernies Chap suggested taking off your srt kit between the first and second pitch but obviously I took that as a challenge and ended up with oddly shaped bruises on my chest, one in a similar pattern to say a maglite and a Petzl croll. I think if I ever enter into Fatherhood I'll be the copmpetitive Dad from the Fast Show.

The cavern at the bottom of the main pitch, which is a pretty wicked decent if you follow the traverse out like most people will, is a lovely sight, reminded me of the bottom of Eldon Hole in Derbyshire. I wonder where it comes in the largest caverns in Britain list? Well decorated and too big for my LED headlamp to do justice to.

The possibility of an exchange trip through to Large Pot is an exciting option, although not one for the first trip after Christmas, too many mince pies made me a sweaty, moaning mess, thank goodness I managed to palm off de-rigging to other chaps and just had to get myself out, carrying a tackle sack through that crawl would be enough caving for about three maybe four months.

Had trouble rigging the entrance pitch, couldn't see where to start, it's more difficult when there's no big shiny bolt in the wall!

Really enjoyed this trip, glad you guys convinced me to give it a try.

Its suddenly popular! Was down there two days after you.. I've been before so knew what to expect but its still a nice place, when you get past the entrance passage that is!

We avoided it and climbed down the scaffolding to one side, didn't think of it at the time but a short ladder might be best on that pitch to save faffing about with srt kit (which I didn't want to wear on the entrance passage).

A good plan, avoiding the piles and piles of looseish rocks was my priority, much to the annoyance of the others in the group who just wanted to get out of the wind.
I'm always uneasy in scaffold supported ares, Ireby Fell etc. ended up getting someone else to rig it in Rift!

i'm impressed with huddersfield... they put the rest of us to shame by managing to be the last group underground, truly impressive that after we thought we'd had a late start doing marble steps that on the way back to the car they were just setting off- truly commendable. Glad you had a good trip
