Sainsburys at Matlock / Cawdor Quarry

I noticed some interesting holes in the cliffs in the car park at Sainsburys (once Cawdor Quarry) in Matlock a couple of weeks ago and as I was passing through yesterday decided to a closer look. The three holes are located near the bottle bank. The first on the left is high and thin. The 2nd is just to the right, probably stooping-height, with a timber frame at the entrance. The 3rd is above the 2nd entrance and a little smaller.

They are now physically inaccessible as a wire mesh covers the cliffs, top to bottom, to stop loose material falling down.

Anybody know much about them?

They were looked at some years ago and went nowhere - as told to me by the person who went looking, as we were stood outside Sainsburys and talking about those holes!

Interestingly, in wet weather there's a narrow bedding plane gap, near the new uphill road past the garage, which emits a fair amount of water as well.

Crikey Paul, that was quick! (y)

Hmmm, that dissapointing "nowhere" again!... but just how far until nowhere is reached I wonder?  :-\

Yeah, I also noticed the water gushing out the bedding plane nearby - lots of it too! And between the roundabout and the garage (just below the road to snitterton) there is another small bricked-up entrance.

I was i charge of the job that put the mesh over the cliff, none of the stuff on the cliff goes in very far before it stops there are two more levels lower down on the cliff below they don't go far.

I have posted a reply under "Identity Parade" regarding the Soughs which pass under the Sainsbury's development. I am pleased to see that the levels I too wondered about have been explored, though I would like to know what else was found, if anything and what might have been lost during the development of that site.
