Search function improved!

Hi All,

There have been many advantages to the softwear upgrade however the search function did suffer, sorry.

We have been aware of this and Q has been searching for an answer - and recently Q found one! Thank you Q!!

The search function has now been updated - please do give it a try.

I have - searching for 'caving cake', a thread I particularly enjoy reading 😋 - I'm delighted to say the search results for caving cake are fantastic.

This is important for the forum as UKC has years and years of caver knowledge is stored in it's archives. - the easier it is to search, the useful the forum is to the wider caving community.

I'd be interested to hear how other forum members find the update - successes and (hopefully not) ongoing issues, thank you.

Happy searching!

Cheers, Pegasus....off to buy some 🍰

An improvement to the search function is great 👍 not tried it in anger but I agree, it's up there with met office for forecast, CDG & webcam for levels, ukc for anything else.

Pitlamp mentioned Chester Shaw so since I knew nothing about him I did a search (here). Four relevant and interesting threads, and one political thread from 2007 (which, it turns out, mentions somebody called Chester)

So I've occasionally struggled to find a thread using the built-in search engine and instead have had to use Google with a site:ukcaving.com flag, with slightly better results. I've spent a bit of time working out why and think I have a diagnosis.

The search here seems to only search words used in a single post, rather than throughout the whole conversation.

Using this thread as an example, searching "search cdg Shaw" flags no results. That's one word from each of the three posts above (I realise this is an unrealistic search, just a bad example).

For me this is a small annoyance as I can remember the conversations happening but often can't pinpoint enough words used in just one post to locate the thread.

Possible to change?!?

*edit: of course that search now brings up this post 🤣

I like the post similar thing but I think there's a bug?

Whenever I post something it always shows that I posted something a moment ago, eventhough I only just pressed post reply. When I click okay it tries and posts another thing.

This is what it always shows me when I press post, am I meant to press reply? If I do it tells me oops you already posted that, so I end up having to refresh to close this.

Yeh it can, but I still have to refresh the page to see my reply, I am never actually sure it's posted it.

it'll take a little getting used to, I think it's actually a confirmation window, but yes the F5 to see post posted is a little odd a change

Yes it is odd and If it was a confirmation window, why does it try and do a double post if you press "post reply" to post. It's actually already posted by time the confirmation window is shown. Seems rather pointless to confirm after the fact. Me thinks it's a bug.

The major software update has caused a few problems. Double posting is the most obvious example. Q, our IT specialist, is aware and trying to fix the bugs. Give him a chance - he goes caving over the weekends.

This thread was asking about the improved search function we have had installed at the same time. Any more comments on that?

Cheers
