Shannon Cave - significant rockfall

Please be aware that there has been significant and extensive rock movement in Shannon Cave, affecting at least 300 m of passage.  The collapses were discovered yesterday (11 September), and occur from the end of the Rebirth Canal (Polltullyard connection) to the Pollahune Inlet (old entrance).  This new movement has occurred since a trip on the 13-14 August on which cavers went to the terminal sump and Easter Extension.

It is not known what has caused it although it does not appear to be flood related.  There have been collapses and run-ins of rock and mud (in places undermining larger rocks), fracturing and collapse of walls.

It is advisable that cavers stay out of the cave until a proper assessment is made.

An assessment has been made of the rock falls in Shannon. A few minor rocks have come down in certain parts of the cave but no major changes that should cause extra concern.

As always, in Shannon cave be aware that going off track is not a good idea as there are numerous perched boulders awaiting the unwary.
