Shit Heap for knackered cavers

This thread was partly prompted by Piglets reply to a post another thread (9PM). Is there a common injury responsible for cavers packing in (IE buggered shoulder) & what would retired cavers like to do (or already do) instead? - Other than bait active cavers in this forum!

Yep, I'm on the heap now due to an injury to my inner ear which affects my balance, but it still doesn't stop me from doling out copious amounts of "advice" to all those young whippersnappers out there.  Same at work where I'm generally regarded as a pompous old know-it-all fart, which is undoubtedly true.  Same with my wife, offspring, grandkids, etc, you're probably getting the idea by now.

Bowel complaints seem to be the main cause of cancellations for Sunday caving at the cabin... it's a pleasant group of folk ;)

Nah, I've been caving with quite a few people on Sunday... inc Jim and Mr Cabin Warden, although Jim might have been us going for a walk to an entrance but not caving... hmmm... never Mr N B tho'!!

Old cavers never die, they just go to another hole.
Thanks be to Google

Awwwww... actually that's really morbid.

BUT not quite as bad as this chalk bag comment...

Seriously though, when younger folk pack in they seem to disappear from the scene.
When people of a certain age should perhaps do somthing else, we can't quite bring ourselves to do it. We just linger like the proverbial bad smell!
Maybe it becomes more a lifestyle than many other passtimes/hobbies etc.?
Working from home as I have for years & so not having any workmates, I'd be hard pushed to think of any really good friends outside of caving/mining.

I have concluded there is a difference between "old" and "young" .... when you are young, exercise improves your health and well-being. Beyond a certain age, exercise simply wears you out quicker and hastens the end.  :doubt:

My end feels well worn out nowadays.

Too right.  Tho I have noncaving friends, it is hard to shift away from caving which has defined my life over the past three decades.  But as Mike Boon said in an interview some years ago, as you age you really do lose the passion for caving and it becomes easier to give it up, tho you do miss the 'warm social bath' that the caving community provides... which is maybe the real reason it's so hard to give it up.

Me?  It's the knees primarily, but also an old back injury that aches with the cold now (and it is cold over here...), and my mental stamina for things unpleasant has definitely waned.
