It's a great pity. I think access has been denied for thirty-five years or so. One wonders how long the current incumbent will be around for. The daft thing is, he could have imposed a modest charge per person for access and made a tidy sum from what is a fairly useless bit of Gruffy Ground.

Hank Williams once said "You can shear a sheep a dozen times or more, but you'll only skin him once"

There's too many skinners out there......

If you want unfettered access to somebody elses property, you could always offer them ?8 - ?10k per acre in an attempt to purchase! I'm sure that would get his attention.

Btw - the field is about 50 acres.

Hughie, Hughie, Hughie, you should know by now, cavers have an absolute right to unfettered access to someone else's land.

I would guess a guide price of around ?5k per acre for that sort of land?

How close are the Gibbets Brow digging team now?
Never been there but even I know progress is good and a breakthrough is imminent. I understand the new high security gate is being cast and welded as we discuss this...  :doubt:

If I win the lottery I am buying Leck Fell, at least the parts with the caves on them :)

I wonder whereabouts in the system they're likely to enter with their dig? For some reason I thought it might be near Beehive Chamber, i.e. before the main chamber pitch.

But only if the owner wants to sell it

I would have thought that they were less than 100 metres from the connection :)
Why don't you go along on a digging trip and have a look yourself? I'm sure that they would welcome the extra pair of hands and they would give you a guided tour of all they have found. Digging trips are most(!) wednesday evenings and on the occasional sunday ...

The area of LL that is closest to the Gibbetts dig is the rifts at the end of Valentine passage. To get to the Beehive will (almost certainly) involve climbing back up the main chamber pitch.

I'd also go along with ?5k per acre - it's hardly Grade 1 ag land (or 2.....probably nearer 3). However people tend to leave their brains behind when bidding at a sale. Not so long ago some land nearby there went for ?8k per acre - pretty poor quality land as well.

I would be very keen to hear how the Gibbets Brow Crew are getting on.
Perhaps you should contact the SMCC directly and ask then - not everyone wants to put info on forums and not everyone is on forums anyway.

I expect that at least one of the Shepton diggers interacts with this forum.
I don't think Gibbets Brow Shaft is a secret,
it actually featured in last year's August edition of Descent, under the title of
"Unravelling the Lamb Leer Enigma"
a corking good read.  I would be most surprised if the Shepton explorers felt unable to give us an update, after seven months since that fine article.
