I'd agree that a krab is probably better, and that's what I currently use, though for me, that's principally down to the ease of attachment and removal.

It's just a bit tiring when the safety argument given against using a maillon always seems to be the 'wrong' one - chances of an alloy 10mm long maillon being left or becoming undone seem so much greater than the highly debatable possibility of an accidental bizarre twist sequence opening the gate that the latter is barely worth thinking about.

The thing is, that *is* an important point - faced with a descender design where accidental gate opening was impossible however the descender and attachment link were manipulated, the practical 'risks' involved in using a maillon would still be there at effectively the same level as when using a Stop.
Concentration on one seemingly unlikely event could distract people from considering rather more likely ones.
