St Valentine's and F5 - Giants

Does anyone know what the state of the bailing system in St Valentines is like at the moment? I saw a thread a while back talking about replacing it but couldn't seem to find out if the work was finished. Asking as I'd quite like to do a round trip down the filthy five next week (depending on water levels). Thanks

Suspect that SamT should be a good source of info.

Thanks for all the signposting guys! Had seen some of them previously which is why I was curious if the pump was ever sorted. Reached out to SamT a few days ago and am just being impatient - I'll wait to see what he says : )

Any news on the valentines sump project please? I did the round trip through there many years ago, thanks to a lad who sorted out the pump.If any is working on trying to get it going again, and I can be of help sometime, just give me a shout. It was a good trip, setting the pump going, and then setting off to the east canal, trying not to drown swimming around and up the filthy 5,and back through valentines.

Still in progress I believe.
Your post reminds me to contact the current worker for this project.
A bolting request has gone to the DCA committee for voting and the bolts might get sorted ready for summer 👍

Hiya, yes update time! So after speaking to Sam T about it a while ago, he had made up a custom pump for st valentine's sump. He bought some 50m of 40mm soil pipe which after great difficulty was transported to st valentines. Currently the pipe is through the sump and approx. 20m vertically below the sump on the filthy five side (approx level with the old syphoning pipes). The pump is sat in the sump, connected, and waiting to be fixed to the wall, and the pipe also needs to be fixed properly when completed.

There have been some difficulties in getting the system to syphon which is the hold up. After replacing the inners of the pump and reinstalling it, there was no change really. The pipe has 3 or 4 connections which are the press fit kind but seem to have no issues either. The last time I was there i was sat in the sump pumping for approx. 35-45 mins and although the water level did lower by about 1.5 feet, the syphon didn't start. I'm not too sure what the exact issue is or if it's a combination of things but I'm more than happy for advice from people smarter than myself;)

I believe Sam had previously said this in another page on the forum but the reason for the 40mm pipe is to hopefully prevent blockage as the other systems over the years have suffered with and ultimately killed the last one.

In terms of 'things sat at the sump', there is rather a lot of rubbish or stuff that will need to come out and progress has been made on this slowly for a while. From the old syphoning system there's the three thick fire hoses which are blocked with silt and rubble and a bailing outlet in the middle of the sump which is also blocked. Additionally there is a short length of the 40mm pipe which wasn't used and I'm making plans to remove soon. I have left a strap wrench at the close side of the sump to fiddle with the connections if need be. Also there is some kindly donated rope (I'm not sure of the origins) which is sat waiting to rerig the filthy five once rebolted which it definitely needs. There are also a couple of buckets which need to be brought around to the far side of the sump to help bailing in emergencies/it takes too long.

I think that about covers most of it but if you have any questions then happy to help where I can! Also this project so far has involved a lot of help and support so thanks to everyone there, and to NUCC for funding the stainless maillons on the filthy five currently.
