    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

I think the questions below need not have been asked if some level of good faith is assumed.

And they wonder why this forum has a reputation amongst cavers as a place where trolls live.... :(    (My first post in years and this is the reaction, and probably this will be my last).

At the end of post I asked if "Has anyone out there seen an email/PDF/Word doc. with the statement in it?"

I had been asked by PDCMG to forward on a short text to all our Club members with what appears to be a cut/paste email text about a subject you will agree is highly contentious. Asking for an email/PDF/Word document with said CADW statement I think is not unreasonable, as I will be the one to which said members are more than likely come to if they agree/disagree with it. I came to this forum with a simple question and have been slighted... shame on you.

At 7pm yesterday you asked if anyone had seen the statement - leading me (and no doubt others) to think you did not believe Sue - and because no one answered you  (other than MarkS explaining how organisations often use the third person in statements) now claim only 24 hrs later  you have been slighted because no one has yet replied

You state you asked Sue Mabbet if the statement was indeed from CADW and it seems you were answered.

Obviously not believing Sue you then, on a very public forum, doubted the word of the new secretary of PDCMG.

You obviously do not know Sue Mabbet to think she would attempt to BS such a important person as yourself, I wonder if this is just another knock at PDCMG but, hiding behind a monica as you do, that's only a guess.

The "slight" was MarkS's comments. Would help if everyone actually read & digested the previous replies before posting, however, it is still considerably calmer than many other internet forums.

What have I missed? I saw nothing that could be interpreted as a slight in MarkS (or glyders) reply.

The only slight here was a direct attack on the integrity of Sue Mabbet.

Here we have someone claiming to represent a caving club doubting the word of someone who is one of the most direct and honest persons to grace the caving world.
That was not a slight it was an insult.

Jopo.

Please could we all be civil to each other.

What do people think the solution is to the problems at Draenen?  I presume we can at least all agree that there are problems.

A good question. The first thing that needs to happen is for those with authority in the UK caving scene to issue a statement, condemning any illegal actions that may have taken place, and advising all cavers to stay away from the new entrance for the time being. This would go some way towards demonstrating that cavers take the matter seriously and can cooperate with the relevant agencies. I can't see a workable way forward before this happens. We could start with the conservation officer of CCC, and also something from the BCA.

BradW, you have just replied to and quoted a statement by an officer of the BCA.

Ok, I'll make it clearer for Simon and anyone else who might misunderstand.

BradW,

You express strong opinions and appear to have a lot of involvement in and knowledge of the politics of Draenen. Would you like to tell us what your involvement is?

I think going forward this new entrance needs to be preserved and improved rapidly to ensure the monument is not impacted upon. Dragging out any rectification by "deciding" how to deal with the matter will not be helpful and will make us look ineffective. There is no option but to leave it open, the only question is whether CADW want it "beautifying" with drystone blockwork and cement, that's what we might consider up in Derbyshire. Though CADW might prefer it to be as natural as possible?

I've heard it said that Draenan is so close to the surface that it's almost impossible for it not to have more entrances. closing it down will lead to more entrances being advertised.

I cannot be the only one who finds it funny that directly beneath the statement from CCC is a photo of David Rose on the traverse in the Twll Du entrance.

When the Nunnery entrance was concreted, didn't the PDCMG drive their vehicles along the tramroad? I heard this was what happened, but I may be wrong.

There are no issues to resolve.  Just put a bat grill on the entrance.  No padlocks.  If CADW want to block the entrance and kill the bats, stand by for a big court case.
