Obviously not such a pointless post after all.
Young Master  Smith has informed me, that he has a set in good condition that he wants to part with, and they will be with me soon. Much cheaper and quicker than Googling!!!.  :ras:
Thanks to all who offered advice  and  to those who offered  loans.
Regards
Alex
P.S. At the moment, still hoping to have to hang on to them for a considerable time Graham.  :spank:

I've been supplying Suunto and Silva instruments to cave surveyors for a decade or so. Prices are good, and I'm happy to give advice about which instruments might suit best, but I'm not necesarily very fast, so do try to ask in good time if you have an expedition in mind. People wanting instruments are getting quite thin on the ground these days and I've only sold a couple of sets it the last two years and have just about run my stock down to zero. I did mean to set up a web page, but have been too useless, and as Andrew says the days of analogue instruments are numbered, so there may not be much point now. email me with queries if you do want kit. You could get a compass+clino set for about GBP 125 last time I checked (with a type80 for the compass).

I own a SUUNTO Tandem, and have found it works fine for cave surveying. As it is my own unit I have managed to keep it clean and dry, and not break part of it. So the twin unit works well for me. Of course I use a DistoX and PDA these days, but always take the Tandem along to check my DistoX calibration against. I purchased a Tandem primarily because it was much cheaper than separate compass and clino for me. This was because I bought it from someone in the USA via eBay. The tandem is popular with satellite dish installers in the USA, so they often came up on eBay 2nd hand. They would typically be as good as new having only been used to check the alignment of satellite dishes and not been taken caving.

Just taken a look on eBay and it looks like they still come up and sell for around ?70 give or take a few quid. Be careful how they are shipped though because it they come in via Royal Mail parcels then you can get stung for ?12 rip off invoicing fees on top of the duty (which if I remember right was less than the extra ?12 I had to pay for the privilege of being invoiced for the duty, or Parcel Force would keep my parcel.

Agree with paul. Remember ebay.com Check your seller ships to uk, or use the ebay.com sellers that will forward a parcel at cost to the uk for you, if the us seller doesnt wish to ship to uk direct.
I got mine from there too., as did Patrick around ?60- ?70 depending on exchange rate.

Wookey, I'm in the market for a new clino; as my present failed one is one half of a pair mounted in the same block I suppose it would be prudent to also get a compass. Do you still retail 'em?

Yes, send email to wookey@wookware.org; I only read here very occaisionally.
The type80 compass is no longer available which means a pair of (Suunto) instruments is now about ?170. Clino only: ?87 (plus postage)
