"The Coffin"

In Rhaeardr Ddu in South Wales there is a small area after the initial entrance crawl where you crawl under a large boulder that is held up by a small acro. This is called The Coffin. It's a bit nearer to the Lake District but I suspect not quite near enough. I believe there are traverses and climbs after this but I took one look at what was after this and said 'bugger this' and 'buggered off' out.

That bolder looked pretty grim 10 years ago so it either looks much worse now or it's probably likely to last a fair while longer.

It's quite a good cave actually - definitely worth the slightly scary boulder.

I can imagine some cave leaders sometimes might make up names for squeezes - pitches - climb etc when they are leading school parties etc. Lend the trip some air of adventure etc.
"The coffin" does seem a bit cruel though doesnt it.

Cruel? not with localised names for squeezes such as "the cracks of doom", or "vasectomy squeeze" - cuddly, fluffy names designed to put schoolkids at ease.

"vasectomy squeeze"

Surely no-one uses that name with school children and, if they do, how do they justify it and/or explain it to those children who say "WTF is that?"? - furthermore, you can imagine the concerned parents hearing their beloved children using such terms when they return home and recount their endeavours.

There's one in Slaughter Stream Cave called the Molester
(although it's a long way into the system in the Remelt Series and hardly novice territory)

I like "The Stemple of Doom" in some stoney cave.

The is also Knackertrapper Hole...

In Waterways we named a squeeze "The Tourist Trap" as it is a one way trip.....no one has ever reversed it  as your badly squeezed rib cage suddenly pops back to shape over the lip of a gour pool, making reversal impossible. I pushed it by having someone braced against the back wall pushing on my feet. It was not nice.

If you emerge the other side you have a nice 50ft pitch to look at - hope you brought some gear  ;)
