Mark - see if you can find the Global Warming" topic. Read it right through, and then come back and tell us if you have lost the will to live. I look forward to hearing what you think, round about the end of November.

..and which CROW thread does that not equally apply to?  ;)

And the main protagonist on that thread, who may have been as equally passionate about debating as Mark, doesn't visit these parts any more. I think it was more of an eviction than a voluntary taking of leave. Maybe there is a lesson there.

This does not apply to anyone on this thread, I have to make this clear first.
There are people who join websites in order to espouse extreme views which are totally irrelevant to the forum, in other words just seeking out new platforms.
Aditnow actually had a new poster from Stormfront who used this as his username.

Ponder a moment on this and see where indulging in political debate can lead.

I toyed with sifting through the manifestos from the point of view as a caver and writing my conclusions in a short piece. I realised when writing the introduction, laying out my stall as a Gaitskellite with Bevanite approaches to Health and Education that I should put the keyboard away and go caving.

P8 was great fun!

I'll wind you up on politics next time you come t'Cobden on a thursday Mark, bring Norman too - that's always a good laugh!

I think with friends sometimes you have to agree to disagree. politics is just on of those points which is not worth falling out over, just have to respect that your friends views differ from yours. in time it will become clear who was right or wrong.

Absolutely nail on the head except the test of time where perspectives will differ and so will opinions.

My father's advice was "If you want to remain friends never argue about religion or politics". And whilst I disagree with him on some issues I think this is sage advice.

I agree with the not falling out point - it really would be stupid - I've had some heated discussions on Facebook (not politics) in the past but still friends with those people - I guess it depends on the people involved and how personally they take matters? The comment on time showing who was right or wrong I disagree with, nobody can predict what could have happened if another party gained power, there is no right or wrong (Thatcher was right for so many and yet equally wrong for so many - who is right, who is wrong?)

Anyway, back to the election that was....
I quite liked coming on UKC and not seeing any political drivel. Facebook, Twitter, newspapers, leaflets, TV and anything else I've not thought of were consumed with political propaganda! This site was a welcome retreat  (y)

A (successful) marketing consultant told me that, for any "forum/medium/platform" to succeed, it should remain true to itself and not digress (for whatever reason).

The rationale was quite simple - a person who goes to that particular "forum/medium/platform" does so because they (primarily) enjoy what it offers. If that changes, their enjoyment is diluted .....

Any dilution will only ever have a negative impact on the original "forum/medium/platform" (ie, it can NEVER have a positive effect)

There is nothing wrong with "idle chat" but there is everything wrong with bringing to a niche forum a significantly divisive and unrelated issue.

Openly discussing politics and/or religion will damage any unrelated forum .... it's already been mooted by others but;

How many of us will come "annoyed", "frustrated" or "enraged" if someone doesn't agree with OUR OWN politics ?

How many have already "judged" cavermark ?

.... I agree with the aired sentiments that UKcaving is a welcome "retreat" (however so phrased) from the day to day life we each live.

Caving, after all, is recreational - isn't it ?

I agree too......up to a point.

Getting annoyed etc. because someone disagrees with you on anything is rather futile.

All it does is amuse the person you are debating/arguing with.

In support of that I have met people who don't use the forum because of the Friday joke thread. In logical conclusion  we should ban all humour just in case it's off topic.

That's a very New Labour response I guess

There are probably as many reasons for not using the forum as there are people that don't use it. It's a feature of any forum.

There are many alternatives now that weren't there when forums started: Facebook, Twitter, widespread use of texting. Forums are not generally 'instant' enough for many.

Blaming any one faction/attitude for lack of use is not constructive: shape the forum how you want and see what happens. It will suit some people but not others. UKC is different now. Less confrontational, more 'nice'. To some it will be an improvement. To others, the lack of (sometimes) vituperative debate makes it rather staid and boring.

fact is, you won't please averyone, and those that pay the piper call the tune. I for one am fine with that.

Bloody unbelievable!
38 posts arguing about whether we should be arguing about politics or not!
I think that says it all - except that all you greedy tory bastards, scruffy, unwashed socialist scum and supporters of the remaining insignificant self-interest groups should just concentrate on caving-related matters instead...
