The Grand Canyon

Looks fun but I think whoever wrote that page needs a new dictionary

I'm not sure that a "menagerie of slots" is the correct term

They might be intending to do a post-trip visit to Las Vegas which isn't very far away according to my map.

Lots of varied slots....makes sense to me  :-\
Slots meaning like slot canyon I presume. Of which there are a gazillion of here including at the grand canyon. It's one crazy network from what I've seen.

Two nations separated by a common language...  :tease:

Slots I have no issue with. It's the unusual use of the word menagerie that caught my attention.

We use it for definition version 2 all the time, what do you all use it for?
1) a : a place where animals are kept and trained especially for exhibition b : a collection of wild or foreign animals kept especially for exhibition
2) a varied mixture

Sigh, JessopSmythe. Stop being so pedantic. ie:- "caring too much about unimportant rules or details and not enough about understanding or appreciating a subject". (From the Cambridge dictionary.)

I posted this in case anyone else wanted to see what they were up to in The Grand Canyon. I would love to go there... maybe one day...

I'll never have better excuse to post this

So far as I know, Christmas Tree Cave is the only actual cave in the Grand Canyon. The main chamber is about 5m across. The Christmas Tree is in a small chamber with a connection big enough to put an arm through to photograph the "tree" itself, which is about 50cm. Sorry about the photo quality; taken blind and then scanned from something called film.

>is the only actual cave in the Grand Canyon.

The Grand canyon has hundreds of karst caves, some quite extensive. Access is difficult, as locations kept secret.

probably very few UK folk will understand my comment
I will happily admit to being one of those who doesn't understand it. It doesn't seem to be a quotation - Amy's post is the only instance found by a well known search engine. Would you like to enlighten us, Amy?

Amy's comment (and my addition) is basically a statement on the secrecy policy of cave locations in the US. The further West you go, the greater the secrecy...
In Arizona the cavers motto is "no caves to speak of".

Try searching using the statement "no caves to speak of" including the quotes...  :sneaky:

Don't know if this link will work, but should be a geological X section of the canyon, draw your own conclusions! :)

Thanks, Les. The raft guides on my trip down the canyon must have either not been spoken to about the caves or declined to speak of them.
