Spend a vast amount of time and effort looking for new caves - including the back way into DYO - and then denigrate those who  have the temerity to cave.

How would you police it Nig - if you were ever fortunate enough to pioneer the DYO through trip?

Not denigrating anyone for going caving but I stand by my opinion that far too much emphasis is placed on tourist trips these days. Just take a look through the trip tickets in the box at Penwyllt if you don't believe me.

So far as looking for new cave is concerned, I have got no interest whatsoever in creating pointless through trips and have never tried to do this, either at Dan yr Ogof or anywhere else. All my efforts over the years in the DYO catchment have been focused upon the discovery of NEW cave passage, not on attempting to reach already known cave via a different route. Should the latter eventuality ever occur I would make no attempt at all to 'police it' as you put it - there would be no need as nobody would ever get to know about it.

Then everyone who fills in a ticket to visit OFD should add a valid non-tourist reason to justify what they want to do and where they want to go. I'm all for that. In fact, I'll start compiling a list to offer to those who can't think of a good enough reason.

"100 good reasons to go caving" - pocket guide for the non-tourist caver.

Does "looking at pretties" count?

What about the columns trips? are they tourist caving?

Going to look at a bit of cave new to me - no matter how many 000s of others have seen it. Also tourist caving? How about taking 1 member of a group to see the area of cave new to that person only?

Sounds like a good idea to me, Peter. Why don't you suggest this to the OFD Cave Management Committee?

Yes, unless you have just recently discovered them and want to get some photos.

Most definitely.

Yes, unless you are going there to have a 'recce' with a view to going back to do something worthwhile at a later date.

Yes, another tourist trip.

Cavers go caving.

It could be argued that people who go caving aren't de facto cavers, however.

It would appear, from extrapolating NigR's reasoning, that cavers shouldn't go caving unless they are finding new caves which, upon discovery, should be instantly closed so that no-one visits them again. Strange chap. Still trying to work `im out - "Computer says `no'".
