Three counties region map t-shirt

Hello everyone, I’m making a small run of T-shirts out of a map I made to help me find my way round the three counties, three peaks and the caves round about. I thought I’d post it here in case anyone else wanted one.

This final design will be on the back of a white T-shirt with maybe a little extra design on the front (watch this space).

If you want one fill in this Google form. The price will depend on the number of orders and what people say they care about quality wise but I’ll keep it between £15-£20. The sizes are standard men’s.

I’ve had it nitpicked by two Yorkshire men but I’m famously bad at spelling so if you spot inaccuracies let me know and I’ll fix them (some roads/villages are missing intentionally for clarity).

I’ll close the form on the 7th November and ask for payment before I order.

Thank you!

Whoops, forgot to post the image, here it is.

Craven is more often referred to as that rather than CPC. Only the top left is three counties though...

Where are game cock, Old Hill and new inns?

Gill is the original spelling, Ghyll seems to be a more recent Lake District thing:

In fairness there a lot of other pubs missing too (brass cat, brass hat, three more in both ingleton and settle by my count, not even considering the ones in kirkby!) but it would make for a very cluttered map!

Indeed, but the last two have more historic import to cavers, the first is just excellent.

What is the red blob at selside?

A65 goes to Kendal and Skipton, switch to A56 required for Burnley. Lancaster is also on the M6. Kingsdale road doesn't just stop, but continues up to dentdale (ibbeth peril cave)

Ease gill becomes Leck beck and continues down to the Lune as well

Glad to see the Station Inn getting a mention. Not a fan on the weekend but it's (the only?) solid option for a fire and a pint at 10:30pm Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday night in the winter.

Okey dokey in response:
In general a lot of my decisions are I suppose quite subjective but you always have to make some choices about what to simplify/keep

- I’ll change Ghyll to Gill, duly convinced
- Craven to CPC, I can see both sides. I’m inclined to leave as Craven because that’s what I’d call it but if someone feels strongly let me know.
- the pubs are particularly subjective, on reflection I just included the pubs I go to often and meet other cavers at. It’s a small symbol though so I don’t mind including those three if they fit and I’ll take your word they are historic/nice!

- the red blob is indeed the Selside hut, it seemed silly to write the word twice, afaik it’s not directly an ULSA hut in the same way as other huts are club owned hence no acronym.
- the road markings are more ‘which general direction’ so I’ll leave them be - Lancaster is at the end of the B687 as well as the M6 so I think it’s clear
- I’ll extend the kingsdale road so it’s clear the map ends not the road
- Ease Gill refers to the caving area, the river is Leck Beck - I didn’t label rivers for simplicity

- I struggled with what to call the whole map, it’s not quite one thing but is the area that’s mostly relevant to me. Three Counties Area seemed a reasonable compromise.

Phew this mapping is tricky, thank you for everyones eagle eyes, you should have seen how full of errors the early versions were

Equally I'd refer to rrcpc as red rose.

It's A687 not B. The NPC is on B6480, which is route I often take to cut the corner from Lancaster.

Other options are To The Lakes (or Lake District), and Leeds / Burnley

The river is more that it stops / disappears underground half way across, although the use of one colour for two different features is slightly ambiguous - maybe brown for the mountains and bright green cave areas instead?

Perhaps the answer is in your first paragraph - Three counties / Peaks

Nothing on map tells non cavers what it is for ...

Looking forward to seeing your tshirt that addresses all these issues :)

I second Badlad's comments. But just to stir it a little more, the title "Three Counties Region" is a little confusing (particularly to non-cavers) as there are no county boundaries (let alone counties) marked, perhaps it should be "The Four Peaks" (Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside, Ingleborough and Gragareth).

In the grand (as well as not so grand) scheme of T shirt art, does this really matter? I don't recall Cradle of Filth shirts benefiting from a note of explanation appended to the often nuanced designs, informing the casual observer as to the underlying objectives of the graphic- whether these be direct or oblique; you either get it or you don't. See also the works of Mark Rothko - do you feel more informed by his painting entitled 'No.14' in comparison to 'Untitled'?

I'd be inclined to go with your initial design. Did da Vinci circulate his Vitruvian Man image for feedback prior to considering it finished? Then again, maybe if he had, it wouldn't be blighted by having a glaring excess of limbs - a committee would have picked up on that error fairly quickly.

I think it's brilliant... captures the general area very well, and includes enough detail to get around whilst not being overly cluttered. The style and colours makes for a nice image even if you don't care about the map.

If only I didn't already have far too many T-shirts...

This thread is gold.

Nice one Lara, love it. Print-on-demand might work well too if you can stomach the cut they take, as you wouldn't have to gather a bulk order together up front and can keep selling them ongoing, e.g. I saw UCET use vinylbear.co.uk
