Through trips

Manchester Hole to Goyden
Second that. This route from the excellent Braemoor site is cracking, if you haven't been. Needs dryish conditions, but if the water levels are too high for the connection between MH and Goyden, you can just come out, and go in the main Goyden entrance and pick it up in the main chamber.

What's an 800m sump or so between friends 😉. Perhaps Space Cadet Doubter actually means somewhere else on Leck Fell ...

(Calf holes was on the original list)
i probably am confused with a different cave but the name calling is really classy  says more about you as a person than me 💯

How about some northern dales mines? There’s a few through trips that can be done although it’s not my area of expertise but I’m sure someone could give you some guidance and the ones I have in mind are largely SRT and climbing free?

That's an idea - I've never done much in the way of mines but I'm open to suggestions

Gaping Gill
Entry: Lateral Shaft Direct (in drought!)
Exit: Bar pot (someone would need to nip down the first drop and rig 2nd)

That'd be a cracker! But there is a 30m jug up a rope involved, followed by a short jug/jumar at exit. Is that too much ascending?
Yeah that would be a bit much, but all of GG is on my list as I'll be up there with the BPC in May and being a Yorkshire lass, I have to get my moneys worth out of the winch. Last year I was still on two walking sticks and managed to bum shuffle and crawl my way down Bar and Small Mammal to main chamber. Marilyn was a bit more of a challenge and my mate had to physically drag me out of the end of mud henslers, so I may give that particular route a miss next year.

I mean really minimal, like Valley Entrance roof tunnel as a maximum. I'm very tentatively trying out some very easy caving after a long break and acquiring some neuro problems (thanks to covid). My brain knows how to prussik but my body no longer follows the instructions from my brain, so my arms and legs don't co-ordinate or go in quite the right direction.
Hi Rachel
We are just putting together the final details for another small batch of training workshops to be released very shortly.

We have added one that sounds like it would be ideal for you, a copy of the wording below.

SRT refresher workshop (1 Day Indoor)
  • Is your SRT rusty ?
  • Has your SRT been limited in recent years and you need a re cap ?
  • Have you been on other intro to SRT workshops/training and feel another opportunity is required before you head underground ?
  • Are you recovering from injury or getting back up to fitness ?
  • Are you keen to get back underground but unsure as to where you skill set is ?
If any of the above sound familiar then this workshop is for you. Under the guidance of a trainer and using a a more friendly and controlled environment rather than a cave, we will help you progress quicker, build more confidence and prepare you for that next underground trip.

Make sure you sign up for the CNCC email list (if you haven’t already) as they will be notified here before anywhere else

Hopefully we can help with your journey back to caving.

Thanks Ian - I did your rigging refresher a few years ago and it was really helpful. I'll look out for that one.

Kirk Gill Pot has been mentioned, it's short but definitely worth a visit (short entrance climb could possibly be rigged for abseil)
Jingling Sike Cave - no srt, on my to-do list, probably grim, don't know yet.
Angels Drainpipe & Devils Grinding Mill are two short but fun through trips without any srt.
How about a short round trip in County Pot (maybe Razor passage or potter about in Trident etc)- short pitches down and back up.

If you don't mind a long walk and something unusual, though I have not done this yet, it looks suitable for your requirements is Greensett cave Grade 2, it has 8 entrances and is 457m long, and looks like you could do lots of through trips.
Gatekirk cave Grade 2 is another one, a short through trip though, it has an awesome entrance though it gets exciting when wet.
None require any SRT.

It sounds like a lot Bruntscar caves might be suitable, I suggest you take a look in NC2.
Did I read somewhere that Gatekirk has had access removed?

That's what I thought at first but a closer look shows SDC being called something similar but clearly different..
Just seemed too good a switch around as I'm not keen on people hiding behind pseudonyms on forums, but wasn't supposed to be taken seriously

Kirk gill has some issues that are explained on CNCC access guide, but gateKirk info hasn't changed since 2017 - through trip might not be possible though:

I second the Devils Grinding Mill but not so sure about the Drainpipe? It was a long time ago but I recall an ever-shrinking crawl with razor sharp pebbles that threatened my carotid artery? Never did get right through. Dovecote Cave was one of my very first 'wild' caves as a kid, shame it's only a hundred metres long. You'd have to wrestle a bit with your conscience as it's not on access land but it can be approached down the gill (scramble into the impressive upper entrance) and then return back up through the cave from the lower entrance.

Anything at Gaping Gill if you sign in at the winch meet you can ride the winch back up and no prussiking.

With regard to the Devil's Grinding Mill and The Drainpipe, here's an excerpt from my caving log for July 2002:

A motley crew assembled at Fell End early on Saturday afternoon and set off to explore the caves of the Eden gorge at Kirkby Stephen, which sound quite enticing in the guide book, with the promise of fast-flowing streams and a swim out into the gorge; what is not apparent in the guide book is the restricted and somewhat squalid nature of the caves, owing to the accumulation of debris from what must be devastating floods. This consists of rotting vegetation (so deep in places that you actually sink into it); dead animals (presumably sheep, though we didn’t look too closely); old iron, bits of machinery, household utensils, and heaven knows what else. What with all the junk and the river level being fairly low, we did wonder if there was a chance of catching something … Weil’s disease, maybe! At some point I got a sharp bit of old iron stuck into my foot – it having gone straight through the sole of my welly.
