Titan choke

its shifted around more than usual. the big rock that was always balanced precariously at the top shifted , i think a month or two ago.
Last weekend there was some more serious movement, trapping Rocky, mudmonkey and the other one digging down the RASP. to the extent that they had to dig themselves out.
Henry was back in the next day and said it hadn't moved since then...
He'd be able to tell you exactly which bit has moved.

It is the bit at the top of the choke. The old rocking boulder has been partially removed, and some of the rocks above it have shifted. there is a TV size boulder wedged in the rift, but above it there are a lot of small rocks and mud, but they appear to be holding up some very large rocks.
It just requires people to be careful - kicking this may well cause some movement that would be unwelcome to anyone in the choke at the time.

I went through with Henry on Monday, and it was the same as the weekend before. However, it has moved, may move again, and is after all a bloody big choke. Take care!

It can't be that bad bendan, as its only down two pitches of teh cave, and everyone knows that titan is a fun tourist trip that even abousolute novies can do. In fact i've surprised that we're bothering with giants these days.

I guess CT has a bit of a point. The Titan choke was opened up as an exploration route and has now become a trade route into FSE. However it's still a big pile of loose rocks with a river in. Most of it seems fine (lots of scaff....) but the top section is a bit interesting.

Cue discussion on stabilising chokes when they become trade routes.....

On our (Rasp) trip the first man came out before the others, found the route closed and had to exhume himself, got through then another rock dropped and closed the choke. He then spent about 90 mins dragging big rocks around so we'd be able to get out (cheeers Dennis!) and making it all pretty. 10/10 for hero points, Colostomy then a walk up Cave Dale would have been really tedious!

i was also trying to say (using biting sarcasm) that while I accept that people want to go on tourist trips down there, i've met lots of people who seem to think that it _is_ an ok trip to do with novices. I'm met at least two people who said that was their introduction to SRT (and i'm not talkign about the group who had the "incident")
In the times i've been up and down titan (and i went up it long before you could get in from the surface) only one of those trips had been a tourist trip (through trip to Peak) and all the rest had some element of working or photography.

I've always known that "that" rock moves (or has moved a lot the last couple of times) but i'm sure that many people who want to go down there don't know or care...

Totally agree Cave_Troll - just because something is now easier to get to, doesn't mean it is any safer. Any choke with water flowing through it is potentially dangerous, and taking people through who are not aware of the risks is asking for trouble. Novices can get into seriouys trouble in even 'easy' caves - Garlands pitch anyone? Messing around in boulder chokes is still something I do with caution, and thats after a few years caving and digging.

On the way to Western Highway with a load of SUSS last night, Rob Middleton and I went to so called problem area, armed with a load of scaf clips and drill power. Using spare poles that were lying about down there we have shored back the large rock that seems to be holding most of the choke back. There is still the TV sized rock to crawl/squeeze around where the "rocking boulder" used to be, but i think that will not be of a problem.
Now i know me and Rob probably aren't the best to have done this work but it seemed nobody else was gunna get up and do it, so we took it upon ourselves.
Job seems like a goodun, as for the rest of the choke, especially the bit a couple metres down from there, who knows!

There are now no rocks in the way. The area concerned is back to normal, as of saturday 26th.

All is safe and clear!
