Just manage to obtain a copy of The Concise Caves of Devon it list 270 cave, many are longer than 1 km.

Many Tony?  :tease:
I am sure there are at least 2, perhaps 3, maybe even 4 (although I'm struggling to think of any long enough to be No. 4 at the mo).

There certainly are not many longer than 1km.

I'm thinking:

Bakers Pit - ~3.5km
Pridhamsleigh Cavern - ~1km
Kents Cavern - ~900m
Afton Red Rift - ~400m
Radford - ~300m

These figures taken from the Concise Caves of Devon although they were in imperial measurements so I converted and rounded them down a bit, hence the approximate lengths.

I don't think that 2 (or 3) as a fraction of 270 could be considered many...  :sneaky:

MCRA Area Caves: 994, total length 83,517m

MCRA Area Caves & Mines: 1635, total length 162,778m

On an "a minus b" basis, average length of digs = 8.7m, and raises the intriguing semantic point of when does a dig graduate to being regarded as a cave...  :-\

Maybe it's a dig until the diggers go, at which point it becomes an abandoned dig unless cavers continue to visit it, in which case it becomes a cave?
