Anyone recommend a Tripod for underground?
I guess lightish, more more important to pack up small.
I tried a Gorilla Grip, which was great, but broke in my bag.
I want to use with a compact.

I use a Velbon CX mini, which will fit nicely into a kit bag and can hold a SLR as well as compact camera

I made a nylon bean-bag with a thread mounted on its top.
Is light, avoids any chance of being knocked over, cave proof, and most importantly stable.

It is however totally useless when trying to place the camera in the center of a streamway above water.

I've got one of these

great piece of kit
it packs small (40cm ish)
light weight only 1kg
extends to full height
choice of leg spans
2 or 3 way ball head
takes the weight of an SLR

got mine for £30 when it was on offer ;)

Yer, i've used a couple of these types, also very useful for placing a slave flash gun in the midde of a puddle or raised slightly off the ground (the firefly 2 has a tripod mount on the bottom of the hotshoe).

I have one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HAMA-STAR-75-Digital-Tripod-Quick-Release-Head-CASE_W0QQitemZ270110247544QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3325QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem now for my compact camera but haven't used it UG yet. Seems pretty good for the job/price.  (y)

can't really reccomend a model, just get a cheap one from (say) ebay as it will proably get abused underground and then you havent lost much.

I'd second that. I bought one from www.7dayshop.com which featured a spirit level too. Handy for getting a level set-up on uneven ground.

I use a Star 700 which is really light and easy to use.  It has a built in spirt level and costs £10 from Amazon.

My tripod has the ability to to clamp itself against a rockface, its brilliant if you ever need to do it  On the expensive side though.

Thanks everyone.

I ended up with a Jessops TP318. Its light, stands about 1m folds to 35 cm, variable height.
Good trick with Jessops, buy on line, i saved a lot, paying around £12.  And was able to pick up in store so still got it instantly (i live 100m from a Jessops).
