Tynings Barrow Swallet

Hatstand and I are planning a trip to Tyning's Barrow Swallet on Friday.  Does anyone know:-

a) whether Mr Reakes, the keyholder, will be around on Friday?
b) does anyone have a contact number for him?
c) where Tynings Farm is?

We do have a plan B, just in case but naturally plan A is always better.

PS If anyone else has the day off on Friday then they're welcome to join us.

Good luck, I've failed to find him many times. Someone else will probably be able to give better directions than me though as it's been a while since I parked there.

Finally got into the cave and it didn't seem worth it!

i just got a key from the farmhouse when i went - no problem just knocked on the door.
if you know where the cave is the farm is across the road.

The farmers Daughter (I think) in the large house with the steps going up to the second floor also holds a key

Watch out for the DOG! :(

The keyholder is Mr Reakes; he's a very busy man and it took me about 4 attempts to catch him and secure the key. He drives an ENORMOUS green tractor so if thats in the yard there's a good chance he will be around.

Have a good trip in TBS; dont wear your best kit as its a bit of a cheese grater. I'll be in Goaters.  :(

No, Pete, I'll leave it up to you - you don't have anything to dig at the moment, what with 'em all having gone, like.  :coffee:

Someone should restart the A-Day dig.  :coffee:

Personally, I wouldn't bother.  The cave narrows down and needs blasting, while at the same time the air is chronically bad, indicating a lack of draught.  One can only conclude that somewhere ahead the system sumps.  I seem to remember someone describing Tynings as a typical solutional cave and that the passage diminishes because the water has run out of 'chemistry'.  This would explain the initially large passages and why, while we might expect the streamway to increase with depth, it actually does the opposite.

You tell Mrs M that, her list grows every day, its only pain, suffering and nagging for me if i dont show up.
Never mind theres always the tea and cakes to numb the pain.  :coffee:

I last bottomed Tyning's in May, we couldn't raise anyone in the farmhouse, t'was like The Marie Celeste,
so went up steps past big dog to get key off daughter.
I believe we paid ?2 each.
Padlock worked fine,
and air in cave was fine.  ;)
We parked adjacent to field/style.

Five of us bottomed Tyning's Barrows Swallet yesterday,
got the key straight away, a quid each.
Padlock operated perfectly.
Lots of water charging through the cave.

About 100 feet from the entrance or fifty feet before Griffin Inlet is an eight feet tightish drop, part of the huge boulder you slip through had washed out, about a twelve stone lump, I hoicked it out of the way, so eight feet drop now spacious but the large slab it was resting on has recently had the "stuff" underneath it washed out,
this large slab may go  during the next storm.

Well, that's at least two Mendip caves that have recently had mud and gravel washed out from under blocks, close by the entrance, any more?

Er, not quite what I meant. In 2008 you paid ?2 each to visit TBS whereas last week you only paid ?1 per head.

Only surprised you didn't post about the extortion you endured a year ago, or about the amazing sale prices presently available.
