UK Adventure Race

Cheddar Caves, where I work, have heard nothing from this lot. We would be cautious about getting involved with this sort of stunt (place of work, bad publicity) EVEN if they paid us lots of money. I suspect they mean Goatchurch in Burrington Coombe, where Cap'n Chris lives. Easy mistake to make if you can't spell "forest" on a website.

I didn't realise you work there - I always thought you spent all day asleep at the dig only occasionally waking to nibble cheese sarnies and have a tinkle.

Mind you, it adds intrigue to the original thread, knowing that Cheddar Gorge Caves have not been approached about this epic adventure hiring outdoor pursuits companies all over Britain.

I have my own sources on the RFDCC committee who told me of this some months ago, and that opinion on the matter was divided, to say the least. I suspect the gallant adventurers of UK Adventure Race are jumping the gun with their publicity while (to continue the firearms metaphor) shooting themselves in the foot.

My mole in RFDCC tells me that at the last committee meeting the chairman resigned over this issue. It seems that he was an enthusiast for this 'event' and had taken the initiative of promoting it while not taking into account the sentiments of most of the club membership. It seems most unlikely now that RFDCC will promote the event, or that restricted caves in the Forest will be used.

The Forest of Dean CC have not agreed to, and most definitely will not be providing any sort of support for this event. We will oppose any use of Otter Hole, and almost any other cave come to that, for an event of this type.

So, They did approach the RFDCC but co-operation is not now forthcoming. They haven't approached Cheddar Caves & I think I can guess that other cave access bodies in the Mendip won't play ball.

I note that none of the four participants list caving as one of their sports.

Oh and BTW Chris Searle went an incredibly short distance into Otter. He really hated being underground!

"Despite furtive efforts to obtain sponsorship from the many companies I have contacted, it is with deepest regret that I have to announce that the £35,000.00 necessary funding for Expedition UK Endeavour has not been forthcoming. It is therefore unfortunate, due to the necessary travel and future planning of other team members that I have no alternative than to postpone the expedition indefinitely.

The infrastructure of the expedition has been laid, the route planned and documented, and all safety issues explored. These will remain in place and it is hoped that the expedition will take place at the same time in 2006.

I can only apologise unreservedly to the team and everyone involved with helping me plan what would have been an exhausting, although exciting adventure, and I will get round to speaking to you all individually either by telephone on via email.

There is no one sadder than I am at this blow to the eighteen months planning that has gone into Expedition UK Endeavour and I will follow every avenue open to me in order to see the expedition take place in 2006. If you have any views or comments please feel free to contact me through the website."

Surprise, surprise! Not.

A brief look at their "Sponsors Page" tells you how close they got to raising the £35K. A very brief look indeed.

Furtive efforts? This conjures up some interesting pictures!
