Using Conveyor Belt.

Conveyor belt is invaluable for reducing friction under drag trays and can increase productivity many times over. It is available in greater widths than that used here.

I originally got some 20 metre rolls from Oscar Mayer a food processing firm in Chard as they had to be discarded if even slightly damaged (at a cost of £900 a roll). They have left Chard but worth considering such locations for reject belt. A lot lighter than quarry belts.

I pulled enough of that stuff out of P8 a few years ago to know that "Ben" Bentham was big on it back in the '80s as well, though his stuff was a lot thicker than yours! There's a couple of sites in the Peak that I reckon could use it, so the food processing tip is a good idea - might have to get in contact with Swizzels Matlow in the High Peak. It's good that the stuff is thin enough to be rolled back up nice and easy afterwards, saves you having to leave it in there to permanently become part of the cave, as Ben's had until I cut it free.

I've made a capping mat out of some (with hole reinforcement) and hope to try that out soon. It's flexible enough to fit into a bag, but a lot less floppy than a footwell mat from a car. Ahem.

The stuff that Ben used was almost certainly the once ubiquitous NCB conveyer belt. I bet there wasn't many sheds or garages in the coalfield areas that didn't have some. It was used for everything, from re-soleing shoes, to making mud flaps for cars & hinges for shed doors. My "best" platform sole boots were re-soled & heeled with it!

Hello, Hanson's Quarry at Greenhow, Pateley Bridge, York's, are demolishing their old plant soon, moving the processing plant across to the far side of the quarry. They have kindly agreed to set aside some conveyer belt for our CPC dig team at Stump Cross. Would any of you like some? It might mean coming up on a particular day to collect, as we might not be able to transport and store much of it. I don't have a date yet, but they have been super helpful already so I guess it's on the cards.
