Valley entrance

The fixed rope on the pitch in Valley Entrance was approx 6 inches long today. Was this mentioned on here if anyone trimmed it? I didn't spot it if it was.

AFAIK, there is no fixed rope in there, just whatever somebody else has decided to leave behind...

It was useable last week. Seems odd it would be removed and not be mentioned on here. No knot, shocking bad practice, and extreme tip toes needed to reach it looking sadly at it from the bottom

It's not a fixed aid, just a piece of tat left behind by someone therefore no need to advertise removal IMO. The general consensus seems to be check before your trip/install your own..

I'm grateful for Malcolm telling us!

You could say the same about divelines. Most of them are literally bits of rope nicked off the BT man and left in the cave by some idiot. But if ones broken or missing? Watch us all tell everyone.

I know this has been discussed before, but this rope is one that is usually there (whether or not it could be regarded as a 'fixed aid'). Even if one was to check it was there immediately before descending Swinsto, Simpson's, Rowten - it could still be removed by the time you arrived in the Master Cave.

And if the person who removed it did so on the grounds of 'unsightly tat', why did they leave the top bit and traverse line in place?

Fortunately Slug had put in the CRO trvaerse line earlier in the day, and those splendid fellows from the Durham Cave & Mine Club (who had preceeded us through Swinsto) were able to use this then pull our rope up and rig the pitch for us to save us chucking our rope over the Bridge and faff about getting up that way (many thanks again guys!).

It would have been interesting if we had come in via Simpsons (which we understood was already rigged for EuroSpeleo) without our own rope and the CRO traverse line had not been in place....

I doubt if any of us over-60's would have been able to free climb out.

Anyway, all's well that ended well, and Slug had in fact returned to Kingsdale late afternoon to check if anyone had got stuck because of the missing 'fixed aid' -    which he had noticed rearlier had been partially removed, but he had no spare rope to replace it with. Cheers Slug.
