Waterways Swallet

Yeaterday, a small group of Orpheus members spent a couple of hours hacking through the entrance to the car park for Waterways Swallet and afterwards had a quick look at the entrance.

The metal plate covering the entrance has a layer of mud and leaves which indicated that it hadn't been visited recently. I noticed an electrical extension lead laid out down through the entrance series on a trip last year.

Anybody still digging here, out of interest?

As far as I know - Andy foster has been digging it for ages - Some of the Eldon lads helped him out last year - see http://www.keyhole.org.uk/tr03_01_11.asp

I think Darfur PC have it under the Adopt a cave scheme.

Yes, it's still an active dig...

There's quite often mud and leaves over the lid because whenever the stream flows in to the entrance, it usually deposits the debris over the metal lid making it look like noones been there for ages!

Also, I've noticed some people throw leaves and sticks over the lid after a trip as if to try and disguise it, but I don't know why they do this :?

hi guys.....

i live only a few minutes walk from the Waterways Swallet and have always been interested in what is down there, but of course i have never ventured any further than the opening .... for the reason of the dangers which lurk down there.
Is the pothole just naturally formed by the stream which when over flows runs down it or is it another reason?
Could anyone please advise me if i wanted to go down there to explore do i have to join a club? and the equiptment i need to buy and if anyone goes there this year 2006 it would be great to go along with them.
Thanks
:)

Hi there cowboybebop,

Welcome to the forum.

If you are interested in exploring Waterways Swallet, then I may be able to help you...

Our club has been involved in exploration down there over the last ten years or so, building on earlier work by other clubs.

There is information available at:

http://www.keyhole.org.uk/digs_waterways.asp

And also on the thread on this forum called "Staffordshire Caving".

http://ukcaving.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=871

Waterways is fully natural, it has no mined passage in it at all. If you would like a trip down there, I would be happy to try to arrange that with you. Do I understand from your post that you are new to caving? If so, I'm sure I can sort enough equipment for you without you having to buy anything.

Send me a private message (PM) via this forum and we can sort something out...
