Weather/Water Conditions?

Probably a daft question given the recent weather/rainfall...
What are conditions like in the dales at the moment?
Wet i'm assuming...
But not to bad to try one of the usual wet weather alternatives like Boggarts Roaring Holes maybe?
Cheers!

We've looked at the monthly rainfall charts...but just wondered if anyone local had an on the ground impression of conditions...not too bad/wet/verywet...LOL

Basically, any rain that falls is running through pretty quickly, the ground being either frozen or saturated depending on the temperature. Unless you're going into somewhere like Ingleborough Cave (i.e. the bottom end of a complex system), you'll be OK in most caves if it's been dry for the 24 hours before, and is dry when you're underground.

This weekend is currently looking pretty good. A lot of rain is forecast for Thursday, but insignificant amounts for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Forecasts do change, though.

Raining this aft at Clapham but above 250 m ASL it was putting down Slazenger rejects. If the snow high up doesn't melt before weekend then today's preciptation may not have as much effect as expected. Met two potholers coming down from a trip in Hurnell Moss Pot after dark and they said it wasn't very wet at all in there.

Or even, worse, one of his bloody elves!

O'll have you know that only the best looking elves help out at the grotto!

Hope this isn't too late but the water in caves on the west side of Ingleborough has come up a fair bit during Friday because quite a lot (but not all) of the snow has thawed today.

He doesn't need to do; he's got a magic sleigh which flies at the speed of light.  ;)

(What do these humans learn in school these days?!)

I can report that Father Christmas was in fine form this morning and, although very busy, was clearly unaffected by a bit of snow melt. Many thanks to all his elves for making my 3 year old smile.

A warning to anyone heading to the Dales for some NYE caving... There is a lot of water about!

The A65 is currently very badly flooded between Settle and Long Preston. The water is a foot or so deep in places and a couple of hours ago resulted in me getting a flooded engine and breaking down :( (thankfully now sorted) so please take care!

CatM is right I'm afraid. I just tipped yet another inch of rain out of my gauge (NYE morning) which fell onto already saturated ground mainly overnight last night. All rivers round here in full flood. Looking at the forecast this morning it should be on its way down by new year's day, for the traditional hangover cure caving trip to start the year off properly! It won't exactly be dry underground tomorrow though, so take care.

Update - Monday afternoon - I was out and about in Chapel-le-Dale a couple of hours ago and the water is now going down steadily. Even saw the sun for a few seconds; I hardly recognised it!

Not something I've witnessed for, well, quite a while! Any chance of an order being placed for some more? I'm sure it's long overdue and the chances of drought next year (oh, I can still stay that, just) must surely be slim..
