Thanks folks - I'll sort out the look and feel of the forum once it's reliable again - sorry about the plain phpbb stuff.

I think this version has patched the vulnarability the hacker used, so it *should* be ok now.

I'm not going to ban all of Turkey just because of one prick

I would, especially when if you research Turkey and Hackers on Google you'll find that there is an international Hacking competition going on (and has been for years) between Turkish Hackers and Brazilian Hackers for the world title based on the number of successful hacks per month; the Turks have been targetting small forums to get their hit rate up so if they can hack you again they will.

Search for Turkish Hackers and you'll find some stuff there from 2003; appears the most up to date news is about phpbb vulnerabilities too.

Cheers - all the phpbb vulns. are for older versions apart from one which is merely an annoyance.

I'll keep an eye on security focus from now on too.

You have been warned.... Turks are bad. I think Turkey needs to be wiped off the planet.

This is a UK caving forum so why should anyone outside of the UK get to read it other then to hack and abuse.

Ideally if someone visits from say turkey they should be redirected to the local caving 'council' in turkey.

I deal with all 'cute girlie cavers' around here ;)

I know of ways around location based ip filters but then its my job. Before maybe ask me or bubba for a how to do it.

Why would you want to go to Turkey anyway?

Maybe its worth just banning Turkey for a while till maybe they forget.

Security is always a compromise between access for you and access for others. If you want a forum that does not get attacked by the same country (who hacked me as well! so thats 3 recorded hjacks in the underground community) then you have to lock down access or leave it open. No software is unhackable. Least of all a FREE opensource (still very well written) forum.

Anyway its all up to bubba, hes in charge and I offer any help I can which isnt much really.

I would be pretty pissed off if foreign access was closed. I do most of my caving in the UK and I'm a member of a UK-based caving club. I just happen to live somewhere else, that's all. And yes, I could also get around that kind of restriction, but I probably wouldn't bother. Your loss or mine?

Mark, given the quality of your input on numerous topics in the past it would indeed be a great loss to the forum and to us cavers if your continued presence and feedback was lost.

Banning access from any country to stop hackers is kind of pointless - all they need to do is use a proxy server in a non-banned country and do whatever they want that way.

I would aggree however I think the lastest forum hackers were script kiddies running pre-scripted hacks and not actually understanding what they are doing, for example in the hack done on me I found html code created by frontpage! any decent hacker can knock up html in a blink of an eye rather then having to use frontpage, i dont know what you found. So using this logic these script kiddies might not know how to use such things as proxys and if they are banned when they try and connect and dont get a connection they think the site is down and think they have won.

What angered me with Turkey is the lack of the ISP to even answer ANY emails to deal with the abuse.

On a wider scope - prompted by the search engines should not we be looking at making internet services more localy biased.

Well, for a start, there's a good deal of limestone in many parts of Turkey. And some people seem to like combining cheap sunshine and caving.
Ghar Parau is in a geological setting which is repeated in parts of Turkey. But you don't want to find another Ghar Parau, do you?
