What about the beer

One of my Mendip caving friends has said that he doesn't think the Hunters will reopen.  Not just because of the pandemic but other reasons as well.

I hope that doesn't happen. One of my earliest adventures was to hitch down to Mendip as a youngish teenage caver on my own. I knew it was a caving area and I eventually found my way to the Hunters, as I'd been told that's where cavers could be found. Nobody knew me from Adam and I was probably a bit young to be in a boozer anyway. But I've never forgotten the instant welcome I received, the immediate invitation to stay at one of the club huts and how they looked after me on a number of caving trips over the ensuing week.

As many of you know, I'm really a northern caver at heart. But I'm very fond of the Hunters and have many happy memories from being there subsequently.

I really hope that your friend is proved wrong. I know Roger and Jacky can't keep running the place forever, but it would be very sad for them to be forced closed by the current circumstances.

As for the future, in the right hands, The Hunters must surely be a very viable business. It's always busy and the overheads can't be too excessive. So long as nobody tries to turn it into one of those awful gastro pubs!

If there were any caves downstream of us there would have been an alcoholic sump two weeks ago, as I had to pour >1000L of ale away to protect our overheads in this difficult time.

I went to the local on the day the pubs were shut, and my friend the publican was wondering what to do. He had 2 months left on the beer in the barrels, but would have to keep the chillers going at considerable cost in the hope of reopening before the whole lot went off. Not sure what he did.

I think the government should have been straighter with businesses about the duration of the lockdown.

My local put the call out on Facebook to come and buy takeout beer at ?2 a pint if you brought your own container when the closure order came in - I went up with a half-gallon plastic cider flagon.

Bit difficult when they are making it up as they go along - there's not really any precedents...

That's also true, & the need to prove it has the desired effect, before it becomes more widely acceptable.
