What's in a name? Smith's Armoury OFD

I have just been asked a question to which I think I know the answer, but would appreciate it being confirmed. So, without prompting as to what I think:

What is the derivation of the name "Smith's Armoury" in OFD?

More the spirit of the cave who contrived to put sumps, boulder chokes and whatever other kind of obstacle in the way of exploration, as I understand it, but you're certainly working along the right lines.

Way I had the story explained to me Smith was the skeleton discovered in OFD 1 and it is he who inhabits the cave, putting obstacles in the cavers path.

Biffa has it right; I was told pretty much the same thing by several reliable sources over the years.

As an aside, the dig in South Wales that both Biffa and I have been involved with for the last few years has its own malevolent spirit, with motives similar to Smith's. Ours is called The Count, as whenever he's thwarted our efforts we shout "You Count!" at him. Or something like that.

You wouldn't be Biffas father in law by any chance?
