Where are all the Mendip cavers?

IIRC Wessex CC have sent their hardy folk plus one or two wannabes to France to visit the Resurgence of Felix Trembles  Does this mean that Mendip is now empty and the rest of us can scamper around underground unmolested?

No!

The Wessex is a very large club and we can send a large contingent abroad and still have enough regulars left on Mendip to field a cricket team this saturday (plus spectators (and probably make up the numbers for the BEC team as well ;)))

Perhaps it's a silly question (come to think of it, knowing me it probably will be!  ;)) but do people really join a caving club in order to spend time at weekends playing cricket?

I'm having trouble with this concept.

This is what is known as a 'social event'.

This is where some excuse is thought up to organise an event (cricket, skittles, visiting show caves, etc.) so as the members can meet up and drink beer, tell yarns and generally enjoy themselves.

As the imortal lines of the song goes "safe behind a beer glass...  ...tales of caving prowess...  etc."

Why go to Devon in the first place! When you can get a sun tan on Mendip!  8)

Why else would you go to Devon, there's bugger all caving there.  :sneaky:

That's a bit rude, Les. They've got some worthy caves; Devon even has a mention in the Selected Caves book.

And there's cream teas.

What more could you possibly want?

Completely untrue - we had two good hours in Prid!  And some of our keener members even went caving on Sunday while the rest of us were climbing and playing on the Rock Centre's new via ferrata.

That looks like good stuff, only i feel i have to be pedantic and suggest its not actually a via ferrata, more of a via corda  :sneaky:

How much money do they want?
Is this venue near caves?
Can I go?

We were charged £1.50 per night for camping in a very pleasant secluded glade in the quarry.  There are toilets but no showers, apart from a hosepipe.  We had free use of the of the quarry climbs (which are rigged with rope pull-up cords), assault course and the via ferrata, but I do know Wendy, the owner, pretty well, and she probably trusts me not to kill anyone.  There are short caves in the quarry including Chudleigh Cavern, a pleasantly decorated mini showcave, which is lit.  The longest cave, Pixie's Hole, has no access because it is a bat roost, not even in the summer months   But, a few minutes walk away is Clifford's Cave which is decent length trip and has the only streamway in Devon.  Bakers and Prid are about 20 minutes drive away.  There will be photos on the Cheddar CC forum soon.

Actually the via corda is only a short section at the end, the majority of the route is via acciaio inossidabile :tease:
