and this: take for example the nextman/gyaldem in the street, goes to the library and reads a book about caving. How does said individual go from that to going undeground? Do they walk around cavassing for 'like minded individuals' or do they just join a club?

Unless you know a caver (I did, in my case SamT forced me into caving), who do you cave with? If I wanted to do anything, I'd be straight on Google - and I'd find a club sooner than a group of antisocial bellends

Hi Graham.
Ahh but we have our own drill now. Lesson relearned as on several occasions it arrived at the dig face uncharged.

Indeed, it did, I think we all blamed APG for that, rightly or wrongly. It is an interesting lesson in how club kit may be rather less well cared for than personal kit, which is hard on those who rely on the club stuff because they cannot afford their own.

It is an interesting fact that, on Mendip at least, there are several digging teams that are drawn from the membership of a number of different clubs. It seems that individuals coalesce into different groups to pursue different purposes. This can produce efficient groups for some purposes but does also lead to social tensions as well. When individuals belong to 'a club' 'another club' 'a digging team' 'a different digging team' 'a special interest group'  etc it produces interesting interactions.

We are out Next Friday night with the Racing Snake in tow....

Joining a club will open up more access to caves that require permits...etc
and I want to go down the Berger again ;)

Being in a club has access benefits but there is harm in independent trips.

Owd Git, I am at your service and happy to join you on any trips.

Engaging with the delights of the sting then thrashing up Beza and the narrows will make the beer taste like nectar.
