A copy of the valley entrance door would suit well? With a hole cut for the bats?
That should read STOCKPROOF entrance lid before you all make commentsThe work on the entrance is now virtually complete. Some minor work needed to cement the inside end of the pipe plus a shockproof entrance lid to be made/aquired. Anyone got anything suitable with a hole to allow bats through?
Are the bats supposed to chew through the plastic?..., but if one was needed a simple dustbin lid would do, not like the buggers would try and chew through the plastic to get, but it would have to be chained I guess just in case the beck get's that high!
Hi Badlad, is there a reason for keeping the airflow? I'm wondering if you know of lidded entrances causing a change inside the cave or something like that?Great job. Well done to all involved. Looks almost natural.
Can I suggest a fairly minimal stockproof door. Something with just a couple of bars for example, so that it allows maximum airflow and access for bats whilst keeping our woolly friends out. Can't imagine many sheep will be that interested.
Great job .
As regards to lid, It didn't use to have one at all before did it? Was it simply the sheep would not have fit last time. I am just wondering if one is needed at all especially as the entrance is off the ground now anyway and is arguably more stock proof now because of that, but if one was needed a simple dustbin lid would do, not like the buggers would try and chew through the plastic to get, but it would have to be chained I guess just in case the beck get's that high!
Well one would drill a few squares in it, I guess. Are the bats supposed to chew through the plastic?
I guess that's the main difference then, as previously it was easier for the things to get out again. We think sheep will be able to scramble up the wall and get in quite easily (they can get over walls, after all), but not get out so easily because of the slope and the plastic. Better to be safe than sorry - would be a shame to leave it open and find perished sheep inside.
We thought about something like a trellis, or we have some Buffalo board needing a home, which is what the Valley Entrance lid is made of, which would be a more solid lid with a hole for bats.
That was what sprung to mind to me too.Not my area of “expertise” but would a few short lengths of chain hanging down (think heavy duty fly screen) allow airflow, bat access and be sufficient to deter sheep??
“Simple and effective” or “silly and nonsense”. ??
Have you just volunteered to produce one thenGreat job .

Not really. I just find solid doors with small holes get a bit sucky in strong draughts. Can't be good for wildlife and seems unnecessary.Hi Badlad, is there a reason for keeping the airflow? I'm wondering if you know of lidded entrances causing a change inside the cave or something like that?
