Yorkshire Surveys

Although not a resurvey, the Bradford did some work on the back end of Gaping Gill in 1999 - 2001.

This involved various radio-locations and a surface survey tying in surface features/ the 'new' radio locations and the old CRO radio location points. We also conducted a 'sideways' radio location from the end of Northern Line to the top of Pickstone's Pits together with a measurement of the bearing between the two and the depth of the latter. This strongly suggested that the water sinking in Pickstone's Pits is the same as that seen in the Northern Line sump and that the two points are within metres of each other (approx 8m from top of Pickstone's Pits to the Northern Line sump level and less than 15m horizontally.

A full article explaining the work carried out appeared in the BPC Bulletin in 2000, and a summary with survey was published in a Descent around the same time.

Of course all this is not the same as a full resurvey, but - as someone else pointed out - the KCC did a major job of the back end back in the early eighties, though never published the work they did.

Whilst the idea of either the BPC or the CPC carrying out a survey during their Winch Meets may seem obvious, the truth is we struggle sometimes to raise the manpower just to run the Winch. In addition to the 50+ man hours work per day doing that, there are the rigging/ derigging trips plus occasional dives with carries, and the ever-present BALLS Digging team busying away, and that's about as much as we can manage.

Still it's good fun.

I will rummage through the old BPC Bulletin and Descents in the next few days to give refs/ accurate dates for the publications.

As it happens I was nattering with Geoff Yeadon only a few days ago and he said "We really must publish that GG survey."

Where there's data, there's hope . . . .

Further to my last re: GG.

The Descent article (with revised 'compilation plan' of Far Waters/ Whitsun/ Troubled Waters, etc.) appeared in Issue No. 157 (Jan 2001), pages 20 to 22.

The BPC Bulletin with the full article is Vol 7, No.1, published June 2001 - pages 223 to 231.

Incidentally, I retained all surface survey notes, spreadsheets, etc. as well as my original drawings, and these will be deposited in the BPC Library in due course. I also supplied copies of the spread sheeets & maps to those Gaping Gill gurus Mike Wooding, John Gardiner and (I think) John Cordingley.

Cheers
