So, someone happens to find out you're a caver.. They are not but seem to know an awful lot about it somehow. Here's a few of the usual responses I get:

"Aye, and does tha do that potoilin' an'all?"

"You'd never get me down a cave, I'd be claustrophobic"

"I bet it's freezing i'nt it?"

"You'd better be careful it dun't rain and flood t' place"

"Do you go along them really tight passages? What if tha gets stuck?"

and a couple of the best ones I ever heard....:

"Can you go caving at night aswell then"

and

"Isn't it dark though?"

They then usually get punished for their ignorance with a discourse on digging Bagshawe and an illustrated demonstration of the change from Phreatic to Vadose in a passage. :twisted:

I usually get it from my father in law, never been underground in his life but I always get, "It's stupid going down them caves when it's raining!" When I'm actually going into a large fossil system and no amount of explanation will convince him that he is wrong and knows nothing about it.

My wife came up with the caving in the dark thing. Said, that we were off digging in the evening and she said "But it'll be dark" and got all huffy when I burst out laughing.
