Have a go at this then...

Andys: Your original clue had (11,4) letters in the words. You didn't give the numbers of letters in your second clue, the 'normal' name.

Going back to the original clue, I suspect an anagram of "dig never as black". Something like Lanksbridge Cave . . .

All I can come up with is Guildersbank (aka Scosca) Cave but that's too many letters.

Ha - there ARE still people out there!
Ok, letter count for the "normal" name is (6,4) and - the get things rolling quickly - its in NC1.

Actually methinks Grahams already has it, but with an unexpected "u" in its alternative name. In NC1, its spelt "Gildersbank" (as is the Gildersbank Sike that it's at the head of)..... However, on the 25000 OS map, said gill isn't named but the general area for that bit of the valley side is spelt with the "U" as Grahams has it. And the early OS maps from the 1800's also use the spelling with the "u".....
So it looks like NC1 is wrong and my apologies if I've accidentally baffled any/everyone with this!

Thanks Andys - laziness on my part for not checking the NC spelling.

I think Pegasus has it, 'hole' being a bit superfluous for Swinsto.

(7,4) grrr, also useful to distinguish between it and Swinsto South, which is somewhere I won't be visiting.

As there has been no posting for several weeks I hope people won't mind me stepping in with one I came up with this morning, for the sake of revival.
