By definition if you have "Like" and "Thanks" tags
There must be "Dislike" and "Don't aggree" tags
So that everyone can have an opinion. 8)

Is dissent allowed?  :-\

It's spelt descent  :)

I think a "like" or "thanks" button should be "I dig this post" because we're cavers so we dig things.

I think such a button for descent or dissent or whatever, should say "Someone is wrong on the Internet."

They very well may be right, but for some reason you do not aggree. :-\
It's not right or wrong,
that is for longer rational discussion.

Just if you have a simplistic "like" button, ther should be a "dislike" option.
Or we just have a "good news only" situation.

Couldn't we just sent them a telex to note much we appreciated their posting?

..or you could say it's making it easier to be positive about people's comments and express appreciation, than it is to be negative (you can still express disagreement or dislike in the form of a proper reply). Impulsively liking or thanking people doesn't upset them, whereas getting lots of "dislikes" with no explanation could be off putting to some...

The real reason that this is a bad idea is that, admittedly or not, it will become a secondary (or for some a primary) goal of posters to accumulate and revel in and compare "likes". This is the reason that such features are popular. They create new (or help feed and define the current) cliques as "like"-hungry posters reciprocate mindless bottom-smooching.

If cavers are really going to be posting primarily in the hope of collecting lots of "likes" they would be doing it already, in the hope of pages of replies with "thumbs up" emoticons, or "interesting - what a whopper" type comments.
I think if people are looking for instant gratification in the form of lots of "likes" on UKC they will be disappointed!

Good to hear. My fears are based on what I've seen (very little) of US-based online "communities".
My personal preference is to say something when I have something to say, and to more or less shut up otherwise. No one really needs to know that I liked their post.
