I've always thought that the deepest could be found in the High Atlas, North Africa.

Translated: Bill Stone is leading yet another expedition to Cheve to push a big choke. It might go, it might not. But the article says he will have a team of 60 - 70 cavers. Wow.  I wouldn't want to get stuck behind 69 cavers at the bottom of a big pitch!

The NSS News December 2015 pp 18-19 has an article on the Krubera Cave in Abkhazia.  At -2197 m it is the deepest cave in the world.  Abkhazia also contains the second and third deepest caves in the world at -1830 and -1753.  In the same issues pp 20-21 Jojar Cave in Iran is a possible contender with an entrance at an atitude of 2914 m  asl.
