Bristol Speleological Society
« on: July 30, 2019, 09:57:10 pm »
Does anyone know anything about the 'Bristol Speleological Society'? Around in the 1930s and referred to in Wessex CC circulars. I've asked a couple of people at the Wessex without any definitive answers, so any information would be useful.
Thanks

This is obviously Bristol University Speleological Society (now normally referred to as UBSS =  University of Bristol Speleological Society)).

In Wessex circular 37 (September 1938) there is an entry:
Tuesday Nov. 22nd. Joint Meeting with the Bristol Spelaeological Society. Speaker, J. W. Duck.

In Wessex circular 39 (November 1938) this becomes:
Tuesday Nov. 22nd. Combined Meeting with the B.U.S.S. "Cave Surveying" by J. Duck.

Yep, they were one of the few clubs in existence at that time, having been formed in 1919:

South Bristol Speleological Society are a much more recent concoction.

The Mendip Nature Research Committee have been around since 1906:

I see others have answered your question. We are in the British Caving Library today if you want any further information.

Apparently there were only about 30 clubs in the whole country then:
